Mynor Tzuquen

Age: 17 years
Community: Patzún
Grade: 9th (2008)
Siblings: 6

Mynor Tzuquen has overcome incredible odds. At a young age, Mynor lost his father in a tragic auto accident, leaving his mother and six siblings without a means of income. For most Guatemalan families, such tragedy forces children to drop out of school and relegates them to a life of subsistence farming. This was the fate of Mynor's siblings, but he never gave up his dream to finish school.

At age 14, Mynor began his own business working as a carpenter. He earned enough to help support his family, and pay for middle school fees and supplies, demonstrating both technical ingenuity and precocious business skills. Every day for three years, Mynor built his carpentry business in the morning, attended school in the afternoon, work his family's crops in the evenings, and studied until late at night. He won academic honors all three years of middle school.

Mynor submitted one of the most competitive applications ADP has received. Now 17, he becomes one of ADP's newest applicants to be awarded a comprehensive scholarship for high school. Thanks to ADP donors, Mynor will begin studies for a high school diploma and a certification as a journeyman electrician in 2009.
